REFUGE

by Laurie O'Hare

I fall into bed ready for the one event I patiently look forward to every day. I move closer to him. The heat radiates from his body. His arms surround me; I melt into his warmth and inhale his musky scent. My face is buried in his chest and the hair tickles my nose. We hug tightly. I lift my face; gently I nuzzle his neck with my nose until it comes to rest beneath his jaw, just above his adam's apple. Ahhh, a perfect fit.

He lightly caresses my shoulders and back. I sigh contently. This is my quiet place, my safe haven, my refuge. I lay embraced in love and able to contemplate the events of the day. Whatever our differences, this is our reconciliation. He tells me he loves me, and I know this to be true. "I love you too," I whisper. He is my husband, my lover, my best friend. I am relaxed and at peace with myself. We kiss thoughtfully, tenderly.

Snug and serene, I am ready for sleep.
